EducationMy personal educational belief statement is “Teach with hope, faith and love because all students can learn.” I agree with John Dewey’s theory of modern education and the practical application of these theories mesh well with the classroom practices because they come naturally. Dewey believed that home life influences school experiences and those experiences serve as a foundation for further development. Education is not only a training ground, but it reaches beyond the training into a sense of community.
Education is a necessary component of independent thought. Dewey also believed that education is an ongoing process that involves inquiry and as we discover facts thorough inquiry, we test the facts to arrive at solutions. As we learn more as humankind, we expand our minds on several levels to evolve. Education is an important pillar of democracy as you cannot have one without the other. Dewey believed that students interact with the world around them to learn and that regardless of your circumstances, if presented with intellectual stimuli, they can grow and develop intellectually. I enjoy the open communication of ideas and debate in the classroom. Allowing students freedom of expression and an uninhibited platform to communicate ideas lead to appreciation of the ideals of others. |
Social Studies through the Arts |
I strive to expose students to culture through music, art, and literature through social studies. The unit hooks involve analyzing a musical selections from the Broadway play, Hamilton as well as Historical cartoons and more. The students can freely discuss their ideas on the two points of view on presented in the stimuli while examining the transferable enduring understanding of government policy affecting the people it intends to aid. Ultimately, examining the art allows the student to examine their personal stance on a concrete issue in relation to the good of the entire nation. As a teacher, I enjoy providing the students with cooperative learning activities. The students self regulate and have an opportunity to work with a diverse group of students.

Examples of my philosophy |
For example, I’ll expose students to new ideas and reflection in a unit on the American Revolution when they examine the Declaration of Independence. The students will experience the language of the document in parallel with learning about the circumstances that resulted in its creation. They’ll transfer their learning through a reflective journal on how Locke ’s writing influenced Jefferson to change his world in relation to their own personal influences. Sharing this information that with their classmates to enrich their learning experience will encouraging them to apply the knowledge in new ways.
