One of my favorite shows on TV is Downton Abbey. Not only is Downton good for the snarky British humor, but several episodes deal with the education of the lower classes in Great Britain during the early 20th Century. A particular episode started me thinking about how literacy can affect a student's goals and dreams. The footman's first teacher didn't reach him, but he tried. The entire staff pulled together and offered help. Teachers should do the same.
